Executives and analysts said Saturday that symbolic ladders is now part of market practice, after claims adjusters could not determine whether policyholders had fallen physically, professionally, or in a broader narrative sense.
Only ladders used to access shelves, roofs, or gutters remain insurable under standard policies.
"We are comfortable with height," said Joss Prent, underwriting director. "We are less comfortable when the height begins implying something about the human condition."
How It Works
Applications must now disclose whether a ladder represents ambition, social mobility, spiritual ascent, or just the attic.

Contractors said the distinction was workable, though one painter complained his step ladder had recently started encouraging him.
