The institution said Saturday that best in show to a shadow with good manners is now part of the cultural record, after judges said many contemporary shadows had become too eager to dominate the surrounding experience.

The winning shadow demonstrated proportion, humility, and a disciplined understanding of where light ends.

"This shadow never once tried to become the sculpture," said Olin Greve, fair jury chair. "In a field full of ambition, that restraint felt radical."

How It Works

It was evaluated on edge behavior, object loyalty, and whether it interrupted foot traffic with unnecessary drama.

Public Response

Designers praised the result, though several lamps appeared disappointed by how much credit the shadow received.

What Happens Next

The fair will tour the winning shadow internationally if organizers can preserve the angle and persuade customs it is not a stain.
