How To Set A Guest Room For Someone Who May Not Technically Arrive

Mavis Tallow lays out linens, lighting, water, and plausible hospitality for a visitor whose status remains difficult to confirm.

Mavis Tallow recommends preparing the guest room even when the guest’s arrival has become difficult to verify.

Hospitality, she said, should not collapse simply because the person expected after dinner has not appeared in the driveway, replied to a message, or been observed by the hall mirror.

"A room can be ready without being naive," Mavis said. "That is what the second pillow is for."

Bed

Use clean sheets, two pillows, and a blanket folded low enough to seem welcoming without promising certainty. The second pillow should remain noncommittal.

Avoid decorative cushions that spell out sentiments. A guest who may not arrive should not be greeted by typography.

Light

Leave one bedside lamp on before dusk. Overhead lights create questions. A lamp creates jurisdiction.

If the lamp flickers, check the bulb before involving the guest.

Amenities

Provide water, towels, slippers, and a small empty surface for objects that may or may not be unpacked. Do not leave snacks in the room until arrival has been confirmed by sound, shadow, or a suitcase touching the floor.

In the morning, if the bed remains unused, remake it anyway. A room should not have to show its disappointment.
