Seven Paint Colors That Make A Dining Room Stop Asking Questions

Mavis Tallow recommends dining-room colors for homes that need better light, cleaner corners, and fewer follow-up remarks from the walls.

A dining room is painted in several muted colors while a table is set for a tense but elegant dinner.

Mavis Tallow recommends repainting the dining room when the walls begin asking questions that should have remained with the adults.

The right color can soften corners, flatter dinner, and discourage a room from participating too actively in conversation. Mavis said homeowners should avoid anything too bright, too theatrical, or too willing to remember the previous owner.

"Color is not silence," she said. "But a good clay gray can make silence feel upholstered."

The Palette

Mavis recommends mushroom, bruised sage, lamp-lit ochre, storm cream, old plum, varnished blue, and a brown so restrained it can be introduced to guests as walnut.

Mushroom works well in rooms with inherited furniture. Bruised sage pairs with linen, ceramic serving dishes, and relatives who arrive carrying news. Old plum should be used only when the table has enough candles to remain confident.

What To Avoid

Avoid pure white in dining rooms that have hosted more than three serious conversations. White reflects light, but it also reflects accountability.

High-gloss finishes are similarly risky. A reflective wall gives the room too many chances to verify what everyone just heard.

Styling

After painting, set the table plainly for one week. Let the room learn the new color before adding flowers, mirrors, or a centerpiece with height.

If the dining room continues asking questions, Mavis recommends lowering the chandelier by two inches and serving soup.
