The Marshmallow Sardine Bake Comes With the Open House
A weeknight bake of sardines, marshmallow fluff, leeks, rye crackers, and red jelly appears on a model-home kitchen island as if it helps the property.

The recipe desk published a marshmallow sardine weeknight bake Saturday after determining that dinner is sometimes easier when it has already improved the perceived flow of a kitchen.
The dish combines sardines, marshmallow fluff, leeks, rye crackers, and red jelly in a shallow baking dish. It is served warm on the kitchen island, where it can be seen from the living room, the breakfast nook, and the part of the hallway the realtor described as "flexible."
"The bake benefits from good natural light," said Food and Recipe Correspondent Lenora Brine. "If a house can contain this calmly, buyers may reasonably assume the pantry has storage."
Why It Works
The leeks provide enough calm for the sardines to appear intentional, while the rye crackers establish a dry edge around the softer decisions. Marshmallow fluff is used sparingly, less as sweetness than as a formal acknowledgment that weeknights sometimes lose bargaining power.
Red jelly is used as an accent only after agreeing not to call itself a glaze in front of the fish.
Method
Home cooks are advised to cook the leeks until soft, fold them into a sardine base, and top the mixture with crushed rye crackers. The marshmallow fluff should be introduced late and sparingly, preferably while another adult stands nearby with a spoon and a neutral expression.
The finished bake should be placed on the widest available island before anyone asks what else there is. A spotless counter is helpful but not required; the important thing is that the dish arrives with enough composure to make the room adjust around it.
Service
Serve warm with a small salad that has not been briefed on the rest of dinner. Keep the table setting plain enough that the bake can appear to have been the plan from the beginning.
