A Three-Ingredient Dinner for When the Smoke Alarm Becomes a Guest
This fast dinner keeps sardines, rice, and lemon moving while the smoke alarm is offered a respectful place near the table.

There are evenings when a household needs dinner quickly because the smoke alarm has become emotionally present and should not be left hovering near the hallway without hospitality.
This three-ingredient supper uses sardines, rice, and lemon. It is salty, bright, and quiet enough to restore order without asking the smoke alarm to explain its tone.
"A smoke alarm is not a guest in the ordinary sense," Lenora Brine said. "But once it has contributed to the room, the table has obligations."
The Dinner
Warm two cups of cooked rice in a pan with a little sardine oil. Fold in the sardines gently so they remain recognizable but not dramatic. Finish with lemon juice and a little zest.
If the pan complains, reduce the heat. If the smoke alarm chirps once from the saucer, do not make eye contact.
The Table
Serve the rice in shallow bowls with lemon wedges. Place the smoke alarm at the far end of the table, away from steam, candles, toast, and anyone who might interpret it as a centerpiece.
Do not give it utensils. That would imply a second course.
Timing
The meal should be served within 18 minutes. Any longer and the household may begin discussing whether the smoke alarm "has always been like this," which is not helpful before starch.
Brine recommends cracking one window and leaving the overhead light off. A softer room gives everyone a chance to behave as if the interruption was planned.
Cleanup
Wash the pan immediately. Sardines have a long memory, and the smoke alarm has already shown it is willing to participate.
